What is ACOG?

American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)

You may hear us use the acronym ACOG on our blog or elsewhere and are wondering what this means. In addition to having a pretty awesome logo, ACOG is a group completely devoted to the practice of obstetrics and gynecology.

Obstetrics and gynecology is the medical specialty that focuses on:

  • Obstetrics, which covers pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care
  • And Gynecology, which covers what you think of as traditional women’s health, or anything about the female reproductive organs

Doctors who practice obstetrics and gynaecology are referred to as OB/GYNs (or ob-gyns). Many of these OB/GYNs are part of a professional non-profit organization called The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). ACOG has been around since 1951 and is comprised of about 58,000 doctors.

ACOG establishes clinical guidelines and resources for women’s healthcare providers that are evidence-based, such as nutritional requirements for prenatal vitamins and best practices for prenatal care. They publish information through their official journal, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and issue Committee Opinions, summary assessments of emerging issues in OBGYN care. They also provide helpful patient education

Simply put, ACOG is a trusted resource for medical information relating to women’s health.

At Natalist, we believe ACOG is the gold standard for women’s health. We follow their nutritional guidelines for our supplements and often refer to ACOG committee opinions in the content we share. Medicine is a constantly evolving field, and it’s critical for us to have sources we can trust for the most up-to-date standards.

Find more about ACOG on their website.
