Q&A: Six Questions About Secondary Infertility (Seis Preguntas Sobre Infertilidad Secundaria)

We asked Dr. Verdiales of CNY Fertility six questions about infertility. Here's what she had to say—in English and Español.   

What is secondary infertility?

It occurs when a woman has had children before without challenged and she is faced with being unable to conceive naturally.

How common is secondary infertility?

It is very common. It is probably half of our patient population.

What causes secondary infertility? 

It can be caused by multiple factors.  Some of these factors are changes in general health, developing an autoimmune disorder, infection processes that after the reproductive organs, cancer, scar tissue after surgery, and many others.

Is secondary infertility treated the same way as primary infertility?

Yes it is. We need to do all the diagnostic testing to try to figure out the issue and the treatment options are the same.

When should someone see a fertility specialist? 

They should seek help if they have not been able to conceive after 1 year of unprotected sex, if they are under 35 years old, or more than 6 months if they are above 35 years of age. 

What are tips for coping with secondary infertility?

Like all the life-impacting health challenges we face, we need to focus on a positive attitude. One has to take one step at a time and look for ways to cope with the stress of the process. Addressing basic changes such as diet, exercise, sleep, and other potentially toxic habits is imperative as well.

Es cuando una mujer ha tenido hijos anteriormente y se encuentra en la situación de no salir embarazada de manera natural.

¿Cuán común es la infertilidad secundaria?

Es muy común. Probablemente la mitad de nuestros pacientes están lidiando con este reto.  

¿Que causa la infertilidad secundaria?

Puede ser causada por varios factores. Algunos de estos factores son relacionados a cambios en la salud general, desarrollar una condición autoinmune, procesos infecciosos que tengan secuela a los órganos reproductivos, cáncer y adherencias después de cirugías. 

¿La infertilidad secundaria se trata de la misma manera que la infertilidad primaria?

Si se trata igual. Tenemos que hacer todos los análisis y estudios para indagar sobre la causa, y los tratamientos son los mismos.

¿Cuándo debería una persona buscar ayuda de un especialista de fertilidad?

Deben buscar ayuda sin han tenido relaciones sexuales sin contraceptivos por un ano, si son menores de 35 años. Si son mayores de 35 años, después de seis meses de coito sin protección.

¿Cuáles son algunos consejos para lidiar con la infertilidad secundaria?

Como todos los cambios que ocurren en nuestras vidas, una actitud positive es muy necesaria. Enfrentar los retos uno a la vez, tomando las cosas con calma. Mejorar la dieta, y otras cosas básicas como ejercicio y patrones de sueño y eliminar hábitos tóxicos es imperativo para tener éxito en este proceso.
