CoQ10 for Male Fertility
In a meta-analysis, researchers concluded that CoQ10 supplementation resulted in better sperm motility along with improved sperm concentrations and sperm count. But what is CoQ10? And is it something worth trying?
Did you know there’s a supplement that supports both female and male fertility? CoQ10 is a natural antioxidant that is doctor-approved, and research shows that these multivitamins for men support both egg and sperm cells, giving you peace of mind over your reproductive health.
What is CoQ10?
Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10, is a naturally-occurring antioxidant in the body that supports metabolism and protects cells from free radicals. Since CoQ10 is lipid-soluble, the enzyme is found in most cell membranes, attracting lone electrons and ultimately protecting cells from unstable atoms that would otherwise cause damage. CoQ10 is also recommended for fertility health, as it may aid in mitochondrial function of eggs as well as increase sperm motility, sperm count and sperm concentration.
Male infertility
Infertility affects 8-12% of couples globally, and about half of these cases involve male factor infertility. Male infertility is defined as any health issue in a man that lowers the chances of a female partner getting pregnant. Typically male infertility falls into one of four groups:
- Sperm production issues
- Sperm delivery issues
- Sexual function issues
- Lifestyle and environmental factors
For those that do struggle with infertility, there are many treatment options available. Whether this is surgery to repair dilated testicular veins called varicoceles, medications for hormone optimization, or relieving an obstruction of the sperm ducts, there are many options available to give you and your partner the chance you deserve at conceiving. If you are concerned about your sperm quality, you should look into getting a sperm analysis done to determine the health and quality of your sperm. Read more in A Urologist’s Guide to Male Fertility. We also recommend using a TTC-friendly fertility lubricant to ensure that other factors aren’t getting in the way of you and your partner’s chance at conceiving.
How CoQ10 helps with male fertility
Oxidative stress from free radicals can impair sperm, causing damage and inhibiting motility. Taking a CoQ10 vitamin may improve sperm motility, which is the sperm’s ability to swim. CoQ10 works by combating oxidation and protecting sperm from damage.
CoQ10 also helps increase sperm concentration, along with omega-3 fatty acids and some other minerals. Sperm concentration refers to the number of sperm found in a given semen sample.
How much CoQ10 should I take to improve sperm health, and for how long?
The average dose of CoQ10 for a healthy adult ranges from 100-200mg/day. It’s unknown exactly how long it will take to see effects on sperm health, but we do know that new sperm cells are produced continuously after puberty, taking about two and a half months to fully develop. One study documented improved fertilization rates after 103 days of consuming 60 mg of CoQ10 a day. Essentially, it’s important to consume a CoQ10 supplement (like our CoQ10 gummies) daily, especially while planning or actively trying to conceive.
